Boop / Rhapsody / Petabyte - Initial Concepts

In early 2019 I was approached by a previous employer to develop concept/vision designs for his newest endeavor - a Practice Information Management System (PIMS) for the veterinary industry. This software would be eventually be named, “Rhapsody” with a backend reporting engine named, “Petabyte” and a consumer app named, “Boop”. Using a very agile process and a lot of heuristic discovery, I developed vision mocks and extensive wireframes needed to secure funding and product design direction at this early stage.

THE SETTING

There are roughly 30k veterinary clinics in the US with an industry market size, measured by revenue, of nearly $62 billion dollars. Many of these clinics are using antiquated practice software, CRM tools, and Practice Information Management Systems (PIMS).

Petabyte saw the opportunity to capitalize on this problem and bring these clinics into the Cloud age using modern software and mobile applications.

The backbone of the software suite would be Petabyte with its robust reporting tools. The outdated PIMS would be replaced with Rhapsody to modernize office systems, and the mobile application, “Boop” connects the systems together to create a simple interface for consumers and Pet Parents.

THE CHARACTERS

The proposed suite of tools have three main audiences. User personas fall into these categories:

  • Pet Parents

  • Veterinarians

  • Vet Practice Admins

Oftentimes, the Vet and the Admin are the same person for smaller practices, compounding the stress of providing compassionate healthcare while running a successful business. Maintaining an efficient practice and freeing up time for the Vet was the main concern for Rhapsody and Petabyte, while ease of use and transparency were the key components of the Boop app for Pet Parents.

THE CONFLICT

The pressures of running a small business can be intense. Marketing, customer relations, scheduling, taxes, advertising, hiring, billing, etc all take a toll, not to mention the actual care of the pets. To be successful requires a lot of time and energy, and reliance upon software and hardware to keep everything running smoothly.

The problem is that many clinics are still run using outdated software that is reliant upon costly servers and disparate software suites that do not sync with one another. Time is wasted managing the practice that could be spent on improving pet care instead.

“I spend more time managing the business than servicing my patients.”

THE BIG IDEA

“By building a cloud-based PIMS tool running off a modern architecture backbone with a consumer-focused app, the vet practice can be revitalized.”

While the Petabyte backend system can be integrated with existing PIMS, pairing Petabyte through Rhapsody and Boop makes it shine! To showcase the software suite’s potential, I was tasked with designing all three to give initial investors a potential glimpse into the power of the system.

These vision designs were used to kick off the product integration work and generate interest from investors.

THE RESOLUTION

I generated branding and vision mocks for all three platforms along with interactive workflow wireframes which I passed to another designer to refine at a later date.

THE RESULTS

After my initial contribution, a full time designer was hired to take my concepts and refine them into the tool we see today. After three successful funding rounds, Petabyte was acquired by Chewy on Dec 8, 2022 for $43.4M.
